What replacing a dryer vent hose actually involves

First the dryer gets pulled out and unplugged, or the gas shutoff closed. The old transition hose comes off both collars. We look at what is behind it. Crushed foil is the usual find, flattened where the dryer was shoved tight against the wall in a narrow closet. Then the wall stub gets checked and cleared. New semi-rigid or rigid transition goes on with clamps, not tape. We measure the gap so the hose has slack without kinking. The dryer goes back with a stop, so nobody crushes it again next time.

The hose is only the part you can see. If your run climbs through a soffit to a roof jack in a condo, or straight up through the attic to a roof cap in newer two-story tract homes, the hose is rarely the real restriction. Sagging attic runs hold lint at every low point. Roof-cap screens and louvered hoods pack solid. Elbow counts on long runs can push past the manufacturer equivalent-length limit, and that shows up as loads needing to run again and again, plus no-heat lockouts.

Vinyl and old foil flex still turns up in postwar single-story stock. It should not be there. Garage-mounted dryers and through-floor crawlspace runs in raised-foundation bungalows need their own hardware.
