We're a dryer vent cleaning company based in San Diego, CA. We've worked this area long enough to know the neighborhoods, the housing stock, and the kinds of calls that come in regularly.
Some vents can't be cleaned back to good, and we say so on site. A foil flex sleeve that's been crushed behind a dryer for fifteen years will not come back with a brush. Neither will a run that's been screwed together with sheet metal screws inside the duct, catching lint at every joint. When we find that, we tell you it's a repair or a new run, not a cleaning, and we don't charge you for a cleaning that won't hold. Same goes the other way. If we pull the dryer, check airflow at the hood, and the line is moving air fine, we'll tell you it isn't due yet and you can call us next year. That happens more than people expect, usually on short exterior-wall runs.

The job starts at the dryer, not the hood. We pull the machine out, disconnect the transition, and look at what the last person installed. Then a brush and vacuum go through the run from both ends. Airflow gets checked at the exterior termination before and after. Only then do we say anything about repair or replacement. The duct usually tells us itself. The build era sets expectations. Prewar and postwar single-story homes put laundry in a service porch, garage corner, or a small utility room against an exterior wall. Those short lateral runs are often original galvanized or a thin foil flex sleeve crushed behind the dryer. Foil flex we recommend replacing, every time. Rigid metal in decent shape we clean and leave alone. Long runs are the harder call. Interior hall closets in 1970s and 80s condos push 15 to 30 feet through soffit or up to a roof jack, with multiple elbows. Upstairs laundry in two-story tract homes vents out the roof. Replacing buried duct in those means opening drywall or working a roof, so we clean first and re-measure airflow. Sometimes the answer is the hood, not the duct. Santa Ana dust and hardscape grit pack exterior screens solid. A screened cover on a lint-carrying line is a bad design, and we say so.
