How can I tell whether the fault lies with the ductwork or the appliance?

Does it matter if my duct is rigid metal or flexible?

It matters a lot. Rigid metal has smooth walls, so lint travels through instead of catching. What do you do if there is a bird or rodent nest in the vent?

We remove it. Birds go for exterior caps with a broken or missing flap, and it happens often enough here that we check the cap on every visit. Nesting material blocks a duct completely, and it usually comes with droppings and feathers that need clearing out along with it. Once the run is clean, we install a cap with a working flap and, where appropriate, a guard that keeps birds out without trapping lint. Skip the cap replacement and you will be calling us again next season.

My duct run is long. Can it be rerouted or boosted?

Sometimes the shorter answer is the better one. In two-story tract homes and downtown mid-rise units, we occasionally find a duct that wanders across a ceiling to reach a far wall when a closer exterior point was available. If a shorter path exists, rerouting beats adding hardware. When the geometry genuinely will not allow a shorter run, an inline booster fan can restore airflow, though it needs power and its own maintenance.
