Length and shape of the run drive it. A dryer on an exterior wall with a short straight shot is the easy end. A second-floor laundry venting up to a roof cap, or a downtown mid-rise unit where the duct travels through a shared chase, means ladder work, roof access, or working blind from one end only. How do I know the issue is the duct and not the dryer itself?
Disconnect the duct from the back of the machine and run a short cycle with the dryer exhausting into the room. Strong hot air means the dryer is fine and the duct is the problem. Weak air either way points at the appliance, usually a worn blower wheel, a failing heating element, or a bad thermostat. Is there a real difference between metal duct and the flexible stuff?

You found a nest in my vent. What happens next?
Nests show up often here, mostly in exterior hoods where the flapper rusted open or the screen fell off. We remove the nest material from the duct side, clear the debris the birds or rodents dragged in behind it, and clean the full run. Then we replace the termination with a proper hood that closes on its own and keeps animals out without using mesh screen, which lint clogs within weeks. If there are live birds or active young, we stop and refer you to a wildlife service, since that call belongs to them and not us.

My duct run is way too long. Can it be shortened or helped along?
Sometimes. In a single-story ranch or a Craftsman bungalow with a usable crawlspace or attic, rerouting to a nearer exterior wall is often simpler than people expect and it fixes the problem for good. When the structure will not allow it, as with a mid-rise unit or a two-story where the run is locked into the framing, an inline booster fan with a pressure switch is the alternative. A booster works, but it needs power, access for service, and yearly attention. We measure the run, count the elbows, and tell you honestly which path makes sense.
